What are you grieving?

As we collectively live through intense times, there is so much to mourn—loss of safety, loss of stability, the inconceivable loss of lives as we witness multiple genocides. And that’s not including the personal sorrow we’re moving through in our lives.

It can seem literally impossible to try to feel and process it all. Maybe there’s even a fear that if you try to contend with your grief, you’ll get stuck in it, unable to get out of those heavy feelings. But what do you do with your grief in the meantime?

Maybe the impulse is to keep your grief at an arm’s distance, to not let it get too close to you. Maybe it’s to compartmentalize it, to wait for the right time to properly deal with grief when conditions change or things feel easier. Or maybe it’s to intellectualize grief, processing each of its five stages with your mind.

If your body could have a say, how would it want to grieve? If you were to bring grief into your body, what joy would that create space for?

During Grief/Joy, we’ll be with our grief somatically as a way to honor the mourning our bodies want and need to do, and to also remember the joy and pleasure that lives alongside the sorrow.

We’ll explore the textures, sensations, and needs of our grief, giving it a soft space to be inside of us, so we can carve out space for our joy. I’ll guide us through this grief/joy journey using movement, breathwork, senses-based practices, writing exercises, and community witnessing.

The way we are with our grief can either complement or complicate the way we are with our joy.

Grief/Joy will help you reflect on and heal the inseparable relationship between grief and joy, somatically, without letting either one unground you.

What you’ll receive during this healing workshop:

  • Gentle somatic practices to help you meet and be with your grief within your own window of tolerance

  • Writing exercises to help you go deeper into your relationship with grief and joy

  • Breathwork and movement to help you stay grounded and connected to your body as you explore

  • Community support and aftercare resources

  • Access to the recording if you can’t make it live

The first half of this two-hour workshop will explore what we’re grieving—what we’ve lost, what has ended, and our sorrow about the injustice we’re witnessing/experiencing.

In the second half, we’ll connect to the parts of us that are resilient and hopeful, tapping into the feelings, sensations, and longings that remind us that we are whole and healing.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

FAQs

  • We’ll be exploring an array of body-based practices, from activating breathing techniques to energizing movements, to stir up anger. So the practices will be stimulating, but they can be modified based on what your needs and abilities (and I’ll demo those for you in real time). We’ll have group breaks throughout the workshop, but you’re welcome to rest at any time. I’ll also share some grounding practices you can do if anything gets activated for you.

That said, because exploring anger can be a lot, it’s typical for things to come up that might be uncomfortable for you. I ask that you please prepare for that when you arrive.

  • I do! Send me an email at evyan@evyanwhitney.com and I’ll get you set up.

  • We all experience anger. Whether we allow ourselves to really feel it and express it is a different story.

If you’re someone who frequently suppresses or denies their anger, Your Anger is a Gift will help you detangle whatever is blocking you from honoring it in yourself. We’ll excavate the stories you’ve inherited about anger, get curious about why anger is hard for you to access, and bring gentle exploration to how it wants to be expressed.

If any of this sounds daunting or scary, don’t worry. We’ll go slow and you’ll be encouraged to check in with yourself throughout.
